My Life, My Love, My Legacy: Coretta Scott King

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on Coretta Scott King: "Coretta proved to be the type of wife with qualities to make a husband when he could have been so easily broken.  In the darkest of moments, she always brought the light of hope....If I had not had a wife with the fortitude, strength, and calmness of Coretta, I could not have withstood the ordeals and tensions."

Coretta Scott King on herself: "In my first book, My Life with Martin Luther King Jr., my focus was on my husband, a man who paid the ultimate price for his commitment to creating a better world.  At that time, I felt very strongly that the book had to be about Martin.  Now I am turning the page...There is a Mrs. King.  There is also Coretta.  How one became detached from the other remains a mystery to me.  I am proud to have been a wife, a single parent, and a leader.  But I am more than a label.  I am also Coretta.  In reading this memoir, I hope you somehow see Coretta."  

I instantly began signing Beyonce: "I took some time to live my life. But don't think I'm just is little wife.  Don't get it twisted, get it twisted..." Yaaaasssss!

Coretta Scott King was more than a widow.  While she was the amazing wife of an incredible man and civil rights leader, she was a leader, activist, and change maker in her own right.  She championed for civil rights, women's rights, gay's rights, nonviolence, freedom, and human dignity.  With all going on in the world today, we can all draw strength from her perseverance as she did this all while raising four children.
